Turn by turn navigation Now for Pakistan in Google Maps

January 12th, 2010 Amy No comments

Google maps has also enabled turn by turn navigation directions in its already popular Google-Maps-Mobile. Google maps is a free application that you can download on your smart-phone. Only thing you need it to work is a working data-connection on your smart-phone. You can use Google maps on smart-phones with or without GPS. Using this new feature you can give source and destination of your journey and the software will display a suggested path that you should follow.

The software is free to use and poses serious threat to other paid navigation solutions available in the country. Google maps available for Pakistan are based on data provided by its users on Google map-maker and once ample data is available and is reliable to a certain degree, it is ported onto Google maps. Google maps has grown at a high speed both in terms of users as well as contributors on map-maker.

Here is a sample walk through of the app where I requested directions from Main Market to Liberty Market in Lahore.

Eid ul Adha (10 Dhul-Hijja) – the festival of sacrifice

Calf sitting in a field Animals are sacrificed and then distributed among family, friends and the poor

This is a four-day public holiday in Muslim countries.

The festival remembers the prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son when God ordered him to.
Ibrahim’s sacrifice

God appeared in a dream to Ibrahim and told him to sacrifice his son Isma’il. Ibrahim and Isma’il set off to Mina for the sacrifice.

As they went, the devil attempted to persuade Ibrahim to disobey God and not to sacrifice his beloved son. But Ibrahim stayed true to God, and drove the devil away.

As Ibrahim prepared to kill his son God stopped him and gave him a sheep to sacrifice instead.
Celebrations

Ibrahim’s complete obedience to the will of God is celebrated by Muslims each year.

Each Muslim, as they celebrate, reminds themselves of their own submission to God, and their own willingness to sacrifice anything to God’s wishes.

During the festival Muslims who can afford to, sacrifice domestic animals, usually sheep, as a symbol of Ibraham’s sacrifice. (British law insists that the animals must be killed in a proper slaughterhouse.)

The meat is distributed among family, friends and the poor, who each get a third share.

As with all festivals there are prayers, and also presents.

November 16th, 2009 Amy 3 comments

Egypt’s communications minister on Sunday announced the introduction of the first Arabic domain, in a step easing Internet access to millions of Arabic speakers around the world.

From midnight (2200 GMT), registration was to begin for the. misr country code top-level domain, Tarek Kamel told the fourth meeting of the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) in Egypt’s Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.domain-name

“Now we can really say that Internet will speak Arabic,” Kamel said at the opening of the four-day conference, hours before the launch.

The announcement follows a decision by the US-based Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) to end the exclusive use of Latin characters for website addresses, allowing Internet users to write an entire website address in Chinese, Arabic, Russian and several other scripts.

At present, all domain names — the part of the website address after the dot, as in .com and .org — end in letters from the Latin alphabet.

“The voice of developing world must be heard,” Sha Zukang, the UN undersecretary-general for economic and social affairs, told the Sharm el-Sheikh conference.

“Good and democratic Internet governance is a means of achieving development for all,” he said.

Man sues Axe Bodyspray, as unable to get girl

Here’s funny story, I hope this will make some effect :P

Man sues Axe, as unable to get girl (lack of ‘Lynx effect)

In what could prove to be a major marketing and legal embarrassment for Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL), a 26-year-old man has filed a case against the FMCG company, which owns the Axe brand of men grooming products, for ‘cheating’ and causing him ‘mental suffering’. The plaintiff has cited his failure to attract any girl at all even though he’s been using Axe products for over seven years now. Axe advertisements suggest that the products help men in instantly attracting women.

Vaibhav Bedi, the petitioner, also surrendered all his used, unused and half-used deodorant sprays, perfume sticks and roll-ons, anti-perspirants, aftershaves, body washes, shampoos, and hair gels to the court, and demanded a laboratory test of the products and narcotics test of the brand managers of Axe. Vaibhav was pushed to take this step when his bai (maid) beat him with a broom when he tried to impress her by appearing naked in front of her after applying all the Axe products.

Where the fuck is the Axe effect? I’ve been waiting for it for over seven years. Right from my college to now in my office, no girl ever agreed to even go out for a tea or coffee with me, even though I’m sure they could smell my perfumes, deodorants and aftershaves. I always applied them in abundance to make sure the girls get turned on as they show in the television. Finally I thought I’d try to impress my lonely bai who had an ugly fight with her husband and was living alone for over a year. Axe effect my foot!” Vaibhav expressed his unhappiness.
