Dr. Afia incarcerated for 86 years by US court

WASHINGTON: US court has issued 86 years sentence to Dr. Afia Siddiuqi on seven counts including attempted murder, Geo News reported Thursday.

“It is my judgement that Dr Siddiqui is sentenced to a period of incarceration of 86 years,” said judge Richard Berman.

Aafia Siddiqui, 38, denounced the trial and said an appeal would be “a waste of time. I appeal to God.”

“I want no bloodshed over my conviction and sentence,” Dr. Afia who was present in court said after the announcement of the sentence.

Reacting angrily to the news, Dr. Fouzia Siddiqui, sister of Dr. Afia, at a press conference blamed Pakistani rulers for the sentence. “They (Pakistani rulers) failed to honour their promises to bring Dr. Afia back to Pakistan,” she added.

72 universities to go on strike

ISLAMABAD: Faculty members of 72 public sector universities have decided to go on strike against the suspension of funds to the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan (HEC) by the federal government.

Vice Chancellors (VCs) of the universities and representatives of the government on Tuesday were unable to reach a solution with regards to the issue of funding. The maiden meeting was presided over by Deputy Chairman Planning Commission.

During the meeting both sides discussed various options to resolve the dispute over the blocking of development funds and the government’s indecision about bearing the cost of an extra Rs7 billion on account of a 50 per cent raise in employees’ salaries since July 1. Since no decision was reached, faculty members of the universities will go on strike today (Wednesday) in order to protest against the non-payment of salaries,

“The meeting was held in an amicable atmosphere and the statements of locking the universities was the brainchild of political minds,” said Dr Nadeem ul Haq, Deputy Chairman Planning Commission.

The government has cut HEC’s funds in the wake of fiscal constraints. The government has allocated Rs15.8 billion for the HEC for the current year, an amount which is Rs19 billion less than that needed and is under threat of reduction.

So far the government has only released Rs1.4 billion of this amount, all of which is going towards human resources while no money has yet been released for scholarships as a result of which the future of 14,000 PhD students, 5,000 of whom are studying abroad, is at stake.

How to Test your Memory with Memtest86+

September 20th, 2010 No comments

Although the computer looks like a single entity, it is in fact a mixture of components. Some components are concerned with the processing of information. Some components are concerned with on-screen display. Other components are concerned with your PC’s ability to communicate with other machines.

One of the most important components within a computer is its RAM (random access memory). What exactly is random access memory, or RAM? It is basically a little electronic chip whose goal is to provide short-term, high-speed access to data. Without it, your machine would grind to a halt as it tried to continually access data from its slower cousin, the hard drive.

Unfortunately, RAM, like any computer component is prone to failure (although the ability for RAM to live a long, stable life has been improving throughout the years). And when a stick of your RAM dies all sorts of oddities can arise. Your computer may suddenly begin freezing, blue-screening, or even restarting.

So when you do begin noticing that your PC has become “flaky”, how can you test your RAM and make sure that it, rather than some other internal component, is the culprit? The answer is: Memtest86+. Memtest86+, based upon Memtest86, is a well known free application designed to test the memory within your system. Basically what it does is write a bunch of seemingly random information to different parts of your RAM. It then proceeds to read these values back. If the written and read values are the same then everything is good to go. If, however, the written and read values differ then a defect has been detected.

malfunctioning.
Here is how to use Memtest86+ to test your memory.

1) Head over to the Memtest86+ site.
2) Download the latest Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO.
3) Burn the ISO file onto a CD or DVD.
4) Boot your computer off of this CD or DVD (at which point Memtest86+ should automatically begin its testing procedure).
5) Wait for at least 1 Pass to complete (The pass row at the top should reach 100%). This means that Memtest86+ has tested all of your memory one time. For the average user, allowing a single pass should be good enough.
6) Look for any error messages.

If no error messages are displayed then it is likely that your RAM is ok. If, however, you find at least one error message then there might be an issue with your memory. The only way to be certain is to take the RAM out of your computer and test it in a working machine. If the working machine continues to work, after its RAM has been replaced, then your RAM is likely not the problem. If, however, the formerly working machine begins to exhibit problems when its RAM is replaced then your RAM is likely

Serious Concerns Over Fraud At Afghan Elections..!!

September 20th, 2010 No comments

KABUL, Afghanistan — The main Afghan election observer group said Sunday it had serious concerns about the legitimacy of this weekend’s parliamentary vote because of reported fraud, even as President Hamid Karzai commended the balloting as a solid success.

The conflicting statements underscored the difficulty of determining the credibility of the vote also hit by militant attacks that hurt the turnout. Afghan officials started gathering and tallying results Sunday in a process that could take weeks if not months to complete.

Indian police shot dead 12 Kashmiri protestors

OCCUPIED SRINAGAR: Twelve protesters and a policeman were killed Monday in Indian Kashmir in the most deadly day of violence since mass demonstrations against Indian occupation began three months ago, police said.

Recent separatist protests were further fuelled by rage about the desecration of the Holy Quran in Washington on Saturday when a small group of Christians were filmed tearing pages from the holy book, police said.

A policeman and five locals were killed during fierce clashes in central Budgam district, while another five died in the western village of Tangmarg where a mob torched a church-run school, police officials said.

Another man died in northern Bandipora district after security forces opened fire at stone-hurling protesters, while another victim was killed in southern Pampore town.

A curfew was clamped across Muslim-majority Kashmir, a restive and disputed Himalayan territory held partly by India.

In Tangmarg, where five lives were lost, an angry mob torched the missionary-run Tyndale Biscoe School, which led to clashes with police.

“The protesters defied the curfew and took to the streets to protest the alleged desecration of the Holy Quran,” a local policeman said by phone, asking not to be named.

He said protesters also set fire to government offices.

The violence came as the Indian cabinet met to decide whether to partially lift a 20-year-old emergency law in an attempt to defuse tensions and end the
escalating cycle of protests.

Officials said Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh held talks with senior ministers in New Delhi on Monday evening to decide whether to lift the Armed Forces Special Powers Act in four districts of Indian Kashmir.

The act was passed in 1990 soon after an insurgency against New Delhi occupation erupted in the valley.

It gives Indian army and paramilitary troops sweeping powers to open fire, search houses, detain suspects and confiscate property, as well as protecting soldiers from prosecution.

Human rights groups and local politicians have long campaigned against the legislation, which they say encourages abuses by the security forces and adds to a sense of occupation in the highly militarised area.

Kashmiri separatist Syed Ali Geelani, who has orchestrated a rolling programme of strikes and protests, called for calm on Monday.

“We strongly condemn those involved in setting ablaze the missionary school,” Geelani said.

“I urge the Muslims to protect the members of minority community and their
religious places. We should at any cost maintain the age-old communal harmony and brotherhood for which Kashmir is known world over,” he said.
