Shahbaz calls on Kayani ‘openly, not secretly’

The chief minister termed the fresh meeting ‘quite beneficial from the point of view of Punjab’s security

ISLAMABAD: Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif called on Chief of the Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani on Friday and later said he had met the general “openly, not secretly”. “There should be no apprehensions about the meeting because it had already been announced,” the PML-N leader told reporters at Benazir International Airport before leaving for Lahore.

The ISPR issued no press release about the meeting which took place at the Army House, the residence of Gen Kayani, in Rawalpindi.

Sharif had earlier held unannounced meetings with the army chief which had surprised political circles and sparked criticism.

After one such meeting in October last year, PML-N detractors had termed it a ‘violation’ of Charter of Democracy singed by former prime ministers Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif.

The chief minister termed the fresh meeting “quite beneficial from the point of view of Punjab’s security”.

PML-N spokesman Ahsan Iqbal told Dawn that issues relating to internal and external security, war against terrorism and training of Punjab police and Elite Force by army personnel had been discussed.

Sharif could not attend a consultative meeting of his party because of his engagement at the Army House.

Mr Sharif is reported to have told Gen Kayani that the army could use the Punjab Training Centre for training police and Elite Force. They also discussed the military operation in Waziristan.

The chief minister stressed that increasing the capability of Punjab police was necessary to combat militancy and terrorism in the province.

The PML-N spokesman said that security of military installations in Punjab was also discussed at the meeting.

Gaddafi to overshadow conflicts at African summit

February 10th, 2010 No comments

Gaddafi was elected chairman of the 53-nation AU at its annual summit last year, despite strong opposition from some African leaders, and diplomats say he seeking another term.

The flamboyant Libyan leader, known for his theatrical entrances, wants to stay on despite an agreement among African leaders that the position should be rotated every year.

“We know he’s coming here to push for another year as chairman and we’re ready for that,” an AU diplomat, who did not want to be named, told Reuters.

“Countries like South Africa, Ethiopia and Kenya won’t stand for it. But he’s been sending diplomats to West Africa and offering concessions for support.”

Gaddafi showed up for his election as AU chairman last year resplendent in golden robes and a cap, and was hailed as “king of kings” by traditional African leaders who accompanied him.

AU summits have regularly been dominated by Darfur, Somalia and other conflicts on the world’s poorest continent, although critics say the under-funded organisation is toothless.

Sudan’s Darfur region and the failed state of Somalia are on the agenda again at the Addis Ababa summit, alongside discussion of Africa’s four coups last year.

But when leaders arrive on Sunday, diplomats who have spent months preparing for the three-day event fear they will be drawn into marathon arguments with the Libyan leader.

“UNITED STATES OF AFRICA”

The chairmanship is usually decided on a regional, rotating basis. This year is the turn of southern Africa and they have selected Malawi’s President Bingu wa Mutharika to succeed Gaddafi.

Delegates to the summit are reluctant to talk about an issue which most regard as delicate for the organisation, especially as Libya is one of most generous donors to its depleted funds.

But Kenyan Foreign Minister Moses Wetangula told Reuters there would have to be “serious extenuating circumstances” for leaders to agree that one of them could stay on as chairman.

“As Kenya, we have not been told or requested to support a continuation,” Wetangula said. “When we are asked, we will know how to deal with it.”

Gaddafi used his new position at last year’s summit to push leaders into meetings that went on until the early hours of the morning, at which he argued passionately to make his dream of “United States of Africa” a reality.

Delegates say he wants another year as AU chairman to pressure African leaders to back the idea, which he sees as the only way for Africa to develop without Western interference.

But some countries, usually led by South Africa, argue the plan is impractical and would infringe on the sovereignty of member states — even if all agree with the idea in principle.

A member of the Malawian delegation, who did not want to be named, told Reuters they were confident that, after some drawn-out horse trading, their president would take over. “We must talk about this possibility,” he said. “But it will only be talk.”

Introducing Zarine Khan

Bagging Veer – My First Big Break
During my modeling days, I got a call one day from someone at Mukta Arts and they asked me to come to the sets of Yuvvraaj. Being a struggling model, I didn’t ask too many questions and immediately left for the venue. When I reached the sets, I saw Salman Khan whom I have been a big fan of since a long time. After the shoot, I got a chance to speak to him and told him that I was a big fan of his and even requested for his autograph. He obliged me with his autograph but also told me, ‘Sweetheart, very soon you will be signing autographs.’ I didn’t quite understand what he meant but

Exposed: Adnan’s Secret Nikaah In Mumbai

Though Adnan Sami’s scheduled wedding on Jan 31 to his Afghani-German girlfriend Roya Faryabi in Munich fell through, it now comes to light that the couple went through a secret nikaah ceremony at Adnan’s residence in Mumbai on Friday, Jan 30, a day before the wedding-cards announced the wedding in Munich.

Only close family members of Adnan were present at this nikaah.

Says a source close to Adnan, “The wedding in Munich had to be cancelled because the courts did not allow Adnan to leave the country, much as he had hoped to.

There’re serious charges of domestic violence against Adnan. He was not allowed to leave for Munich and the wedding plans in Germany had to be put off.”

Rather than cancel the wedding Adnan decided to have a flash ceremony in Mumbai. All the arrangements were made by Adnan’s son Azaan, Adnan now intends to host a wedding reception in Munich at Roya’s place and then another reception in Mumbai for all his friends.

But as things stand Roya and Adnan are now man and wife.

Speaking from Munich Adnan’s third wife Roya Fariyadi says, “Adnan is the perfect man for me. I love not just the man but also his mother and son. In fact Adnan’s son Azaan and I get along like a house on fire. We often gang up together and tease the hell out of Adnan.”

Roya says she is not the least perturbed by Adnan’s past record of broken marriages. “What happened in the past is the past. What I see is a man I’d like to spend my life with. Adnan is king caring and gentle.

I hope we can make our marriage last forever. Like any good wife I plan to shift to Mumbai to be with Adnan and his family. But I’ll keep visiting Germany. That’s where my parents stay.”

Roya’s parents are from Afghanistan. They moved to Germany 30 years ago and hold German passports.

Adnan’s first wife Zeba Bakhtiar has spoken to Roya. They apparently like one another. As for his second wife the warring Sabah, her views on Adnan’s third wife are now known but easy to guess.

At first Adnan was reluctant to confirm the secret nikaah. He finally said, “Yes we got married last Friday at a secret nikaah. And we’re loving it. Now deal with it.”
