Turn by turn navigation Now for Pakistan in Google Maps

January 12th, 2010 No comments

Google maps has also enabled turn by turn navigation directions in its already popular Google-Maps-Mobile. Google maps is a free application that you can download on your smart-phone. Only thing you need it to work is a working data-connection on your smart-phone. You can use Google maps on smart-phones with or without GPS. Using this new feature you can give source and destination of your journey and the software will display a suggested path that you should follow.

The software is free to use and poses serious threat to other paid navigation solutions available in the country. Google maps available for Pakistan are based on data provided by its users on Google map-maker and once ample data is available and is reliable to a certain degree, it is ported onto Google maps. Google maps has grown at a high speed both in terms of users as well as contributors on map-maker.

Here is a sample walk through of the app where I requested directions from Main Market to Liberty Market in Lahore.

Nadia has been reunited with her mother Sarah Taylor in Libya

A girl from Greater Manchester who was abducted by her father and taken to Libya has been reunited with her mother after two years apart.

Six-year-old Nadia Fawzi is now with her mother Sarah Taylor, from Wigan, who had moved to Libya to find her.

Nadia’s father, Fawzi Abu Arghub, abducted her under the pretence he was taking her to a party. He boarded a plane with her to his home country.

Ms Taylor said: “I am overjoyed to be reunited with Nadia after two years.”

Following the abduction, Ms Taylor left her job and moved to Libya to find her daughter.

She was awarded custody by the Libyan courts, but Mr Abu Arghub refused to disclose the whereabouts of their daughter.

Ms Taylor and Nadia were finally reunited in the Libyan capital Tripoli earlier.

Details of the reunion are not yet clear, but it is believed to be the culmination of more than two years of behind-the-scenes diplomacy.

Ms Taylor said: “I am delighted that she is fit and well, if naturally disorientated by this sudden change in the pattern of her life.

Dave and Dot Taylor are overjoyed their granddaughter is reunited with her mother

“We will spend the next few days just getting to know each other again.”

Nadia does not speak much English. Ms Taylor said it would be tough, but she could “handle that”.

The mother thanked her local MP Andy Burnham, the prime minister and Greater Manchester Police for their support.

She added: “Above all, I want to thank Colonel Gaddafi, who was kind enough to meet me and listen to my story, and has done so much to make today possible.”

Salman Khan Paints With His Fingers

January 8th, 2010 6 comments

Salman Khan has his fingers in too many pies. He’s an actor, a painter and now he’s even penned a story for Veer. Interestingly, it was on the sets of this film that a hidden skill of Salman the painter came to the fore – his knack for painting with his fingers.

We hear that in between the shots on the sets of the movie, Salman would get his fingers smudged with paints and create exotic, spiritual faces on canvases.

Producer Vijay Galani was particularly struck with Salman’s nifty finger work. Not just the canvases, Salman also helped the film’s art director in painting the sets.

And now that the film is set to release on January 22, we hear that Galani is thinking of putting up for auction the canvases Salman painted on the sets. The idea is still tentative, but there’s a strong chance that the paintings will go under the hammer.
