The number of immigrants in the United States had dropped for the first time in 38 years, the U.S. Census Bureau announced Tuesday, chiefly because unemployment has soared in the recession. Instead, many young people worldwide including Americans are boarding planes bound for China.

Libyan leader is in New York and spoke at the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday. This is his first visit to the United Sates since he siezed power 40 years ago, but he is getting a cold reception. He’s having a tough time finding a place to pitch his tent. Before arriving in the U.S., the Libyan government prepared to pitch the tent in a New Jersey town but faced overwhelming opposition there. Most recently, Gadhafi pitched his reception tent in the town of Bedford, New York but now an official there says it has come down.

Pakistan expects 85% literacy rate by 2015

Pakistani Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani said that the government is committed to achieving the goal of 85 percent literacy rate by 2015, the local NNI news agency reported.

Addressing a seminar marking the International Literacy Day, he said education is the top priority of the government, which has declared 2010 as year of literacy.

He said education plays an important role in overall socio-economic development of the country. The government has allocated over 31 billion rupees in the budget this year for the education sector. The government will raise the education budget to four percent of GDP from the existing 2.4 percent.
